Lahore Memories - LM011: The Mian’s of Baghbanpura - Lahore c. 1910

"This photograph is believed to have been taken in London circa 1910 and shows four members of the Mian Family of Baghbanpura, Lahore. All of whom were, or subsequently became, noted lawyers, judges and politicians.

Seated on chair (left) Justice Mian Shah Din, a Barrister and later the first Muslim Judge of The Lahore High Court. In this picture, he was visiting his son and nephews in England who were students at that time at Oxford and Cambridge Universities. Mian Shah Din was also later President of All India Muslim League. The building Shah Din Manzil constructed by him at Charing Cross on The Mall is still there and a landmark of Lahore.

Seated on chair (right) Justice Sir Mian Abdul Rashid, then a student of Christ’s College, Cambridge. He was later called to the Bar from Inner Temple, London and in 1946 was knighted and became Chief Justice of the Lahore High Court. In 1947, on the birth of Pakistan, he was appointed as the first Chief Justice of Pakistan and administered the oath of office to Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah as Pakistan’s first Governor General. Sir Abdul was also awarded Pakistan’s highest civilian honour, Hilal e Pakistan.

Standing-Mian Bashir Ahmed, then a student at Oxford University. He was the son of Justice Mian Shah Din and became a distinguished lawyer and political leader during the freedom struggle. A leading member of the All India Muslim League he hosted Quaid-e Azam at his home Al-Manzar in Lahore on several historic occasions.

Seated on stool- Mian Muhammad Rafi, then a student at Oxford University. He was the son of the noted Barrister and politician Sir Mian Muhammad Shafi and was himself a Barrister and member of the Lahore Bar as well."
